The plate goes on loose, then they slide into the carbs and rotate as I recall. Getting the horns back in is a bit tricky. I put a little oil on the tubes to reassemble. You can clean the jets without disassembling the "quad pack". If it hasn't come off before it will take some going from corner to corner till it comes out of the rubber tubes. Find safe points on the carbs to pry where you won't break anything, and be gentle. Loosen the hose clamps on the tubes and gently pry the carb assembly up. There are four rubber tubes connecting it to the engine. Slide plate out.Īll four carbs come off as one assembly. Loosen metal intake housing plate, rotate and remove intake horns being careful not to bend the horns or drop screws down carb throats. Take off rubber intake thingy and slide out air filter cover toward the left side (it's a ***** because of the flap in front). You should probably get a service manual.Īs I recall: Remove seat, gas tank, side covers and brackets, and plastic things in front corners of frame. Bike will run without installing air box and body panels, etc.SOURCE: Carb removal from 1994 VF750C Honda Magna Cursing loudly will help! Tighten clamps, connect fuel line and test. Press carb assy down onto front head, then rotate rear of assy down while pushing forward to get into rear isolators. Put isolators on front carbs and rear heads, make sure all 8 clamps are loosely installed. Connect throttle and choke cables before installing carbs. Reinstalling the carbs is almost as much fun as taking them off! New isolators and silicone spray helps LOTS! Isolators are molded to fit properly only one way. Be careful of the diaphragms and note that the rear cylinder carbs have different main jets than the fronts.

I'm sure there are numerous videos on how to clean and rebuild Keihn CV carbs on the web.

I'm not sure if these are still available, so you might want to check first! It will take lots of effort to get the carbs off! And don't try taking them off of the mounting plate, then off of the engine 1 at a time! There are lots of linkages, springs, tubes and o-rings in the assy.

The isolators will be very hard and likely crack and need replaced once carbs are removed. Then loosen the 8 clamps (2 per carb) on the "isolators" (rubber tubes), then pry the carb assy (4 carbs on a plate) off of the heads. You will have to remove the seat, body panels, fuel tank and air box first. If you determine carbs need rebuilt: Removing carbs on the VF500s is a PITA! You CANNOT remove the bowls while the carbs are attached to the engine. If spark is good and you have wet plug, check compression on all 4 cylinders. Wet plug: connect the plug to it's ignition wire, while holding by the insulated part of the plug wire, hold the threaded part to unpainted metal on engine or frame, turn on key, with kill switch on RUN, hit the starter button and watch for a spark. That hose should connect to a nipple on one of the cylinder heads, IIRC. Make sure vacuum hose to fuel valve is connected and in good shape.

If fuel pump not running, check fuse, wiring, and connections. Fuel pump should run and fuel should come out of the hose. Turn fuel valve to RES and turn key on (don't try to start). Turn fuel valve to OFF, pull the fuel line off of carbs (left side) and put end of hose in a can or cup. The valve is a notorious issue with many old bikes.

If wet, spark, compression or timing issue.ĭry plug: these bikes have an electric fuel pump and vacuum operated fuel valve. Also smell it, as old fuel smells like varnish, different than fresh fuel. If it doesn't start, pull one of the spark plugs and check to see if it is wet with fuel.

With kill switch in RUN, tank fuel valve on RES (reserve), full choke and holding throttle wide open, crank for a few seconds. Use jumper cables or a jump pack to get the engine turning over well. Old gas tanks get lots of rust and crud in them. If you haven't yet, you probably should change the fuel filter. Check/clean main hot wire at starter relay, and ground wire is tight and undamaged. Simple things first Make sure Kill switch is in RUN position Made sure bike is in neutral If bike has a center stand, put it up on center stand and put kickstand up Make sure all fuses are good. If you want to keep and work on this (or any) bike, get a service manual! Preferably the Factory one! The V30 uses the same engine, except the cams are different. I know every nut and bolt on mine, down to and including the connecting rods. Wiseco used my engine for their piston development. I've owned a VF500F since 1984, one of the first 400 in the U.S.
